According to the Liquor Distribution Branch website, there still are almost 2,000 bottles of the 2005 vintage of this Italian red around British Columbia. So why is the agent showing the 2006 already? Well, the 2005 vintage rated a solid four stars but the 2006 was one of the rare five star vintages, as rated by Masi, the producer. If the vintage on the market is good, the coming one is stellar.
Masi created Campofiorin in 1964 when trying to get the last bit of flavour from the skins of grapes used to make Amarone. The skins were added to fermenting red wine, boosting its colour, aroma and flavour. Subsequently, Masi refined this with an even closer copying of the Amarone method: now, grapes that have been partially dried are added instead, yielding a less tannic wine. This is a bold, ripe red, with aromas of smoke and plums and with concentrated flavours of plums, leather and chocolate. This is an amazing quality wine for the money, with good aging potential. The winery suggests 10 to 20 years.
