Young & Wyse refers to Michelle Young and Stephan Wyse, the wife and husband team who have just released the first wines from their new winery at Osoyoos. Stephan is the former winemaker at his family’s Burrowing Owl Estate Winery. After taking a winemaking sabbatical two years ago, he and Michelle launched their own winery. The first two wines are this 2008 Shiraz and a 2008 Merlot, priced at $19.99. Both have been flying off the shelves of VQA stores as consumers have figured out that these are made in the Burrowing Owl style. Neither wine is quite as concentrated as its Burrowing Owl counterpart, primarily reflecting the different vineyard supplying Young & Wyse. However, the wines deliver good value.

My favourite is the bold, ripe Shiraz. The wine begins with pepper and red fruit aromas. On the palate, there are flavours of blackberry, plums, black cherries, with a touch of chocolate and pepper on the finish. A delicious wine, it is still young. It benefitted from being decanted and it could be cellared for a few years as well. This winery has made a strong start.
